ARKHE: Karanlık

Role of Kubilay ÖzmenExhibition Design and Management
DateMay 12, 2026 – June 20, 2026

Drawing on nearly fifteen years of cave research, Özge Kahraman's "ARKHE: Darkness" treats darkness not as absence but as the potential of what has not yet taken form. Working in a pointillist technique that evokes mineral textures and the sedimentation of time, the artist invites viewers to contemplate the origin of being — a beginning hidden in the depths of the cave.

Taking this line of thought as its starting point, Özge Kahraman’s exhibition “ARKHE: Darkness” associates darkness not with absence, but with the potential of what has not yet taken form. For something to come into being, it must first pass through an unseen process. In this sense, darkness can be understood as the hidden domain of beginning. This approach finds its tangible counterpart in caves. Shaped over millions of years by the slow movement of water, mineral and stone, caves — natural spaces that silently record the earth’s oldest formative processes — sit at the conceptual center of the exhibition.
Through nearly fifteen years of cave research, Özge Kahraman approaches the underground not merely as a physical space to be explored, but as a threshold that opens onto thinking about the origin of being. Her practice translates the formations encountered in caves, and the experience these spaces generate, into a visual language. On surfaces built through a pointillist technique, thousands of dots come together to evoke mineral textures, the layered structure of stone, and the sedimentation of time. Each dot appears as a small yet potent trace of the slow formative processes taking place in the depths of the earth. As such, the artist’s works do not merely represent a place; they also seek to make visible the concept of arkhe — the idea of the origin of being.
“ARKHE: Darkness” draws the viewer away from the visible world of the surface, inviting them to contemplate the beginning hidden in the depths. Here, the darkness of the cave is not the void of the unknown, but a foundational space carrying the earth’s formation. In this depth, darkness becomes a space that preserves the oldest beginning of being.

Her work has been exhibited at institutions including Pera Museum, CerModern and Akbank Sanat. Having taken part in events such as the Turkey Textile Biennial and Artweeks Istanbul, she opened her first solo exhibition, “The Memory of Darkness,” in 2025. Selected for the Piksel New Media Guest Artist Program, she presented works focused on cave formations produced within the program at the Noise Media Art Fair. Working with an interdisciplinary approach, the artist continues to live and produce in Istanbul.
